Lately, I’ve been having so many friends that I know from WSU and in general that say there isn’t anything to do in Wichita. Which I would like to inform you and anyone else that might think that Wichita is boring, never has free events or anything to do on the weekends; that you are completely wrong and here is why.
Wichita is a community that prides itself in the arts and outdoor activities, which is why it is distinctly different from Kansas City, Topeka, or Oklahoma City. With Wichita also being a smaller city than Kansas City, it also means that we have local artists and entertainers that perform for their own neighbors and friends. When you see the Phlox (the local Fire Throwers) and any of the artists during Final Friday showings, you either recognize them from previous events or know them personally. In any other city, when would you get that kind of connection?
Now aside from Final Fridays, Wichita also has city parks that have dog parks, hiking/biking trails, and multiple activities every weekend. This last week actually my mom and I wanted to get out of the house and found that in Chaplin Park, they were having “Come Fly A Kite” day. We were able to sit in our car and watch people fly the kites in the open field and admire the various beautiful kites.
The City of Wichita also has events such as; Time Eddy III Doctor Who, Renaissance Festival, the Annual Wichita Asian Festival, and Tallgrass Film Festival to name a few of the more popular ones around the area. Of course, those are only a few of the multiple things you can do! You can also explore Old Cowtown Museum, Botanical Gardens, Sedgwick County Park and Zoo, Keeper of the Plains, the Wichita Art Museum and the Indian Center to name a few either for free or a low cost during certain times of the year.
One of the cool parts about Wichita is the websites that are available to let you know what is going on this weekend. These websites have the most up-to-date information about every kind of event you can think of from dancing, art, movies, lectures, educational events, and music.
So the next time you ever feel bored, want something to do with your friends that involves outside activities or is completely free……check out any of those pages and under “Events” on Facebook. Any of those resources will help you find things to do on the weekend or any of weekday. This is also possible for those who read this blog and leave outside of Wichita or Kansas; if you ever want to find out what is happening in your city – google some local “things to do” websites that are in your area and use your “Events” tab on Facebook. I find using these sites to be really great when I am trying to find something to do for dates and like this weekend, I used them to find stuff for my mom and me to do with it being fall break for me. So please make sure to check out the events in the area before you ever think that Wichita is boring and doesn’t have anything to offer. You will figure out that there is a LOT more to Wichita then what most people think, it just takes some digging.
